In the dynamic landscape of New England’s energy market, businesses, especially those within the New Hampshire Grocers Association (NHGA), face the constant challenge of managing energy costs. To address this, the NHGA has forged a valuable partnership with Sprague Energy, a company with a rich 155-year history and deep understanding of the region’s energy market intricacies.

On March 25, 2025, Bob Savary, an Energy Portfolio Manager at Sprague Energy, presented to the NHGA, providing insights into the factors influencing energy prices in New England and how NHGA members can benefit from using Sprague as their third-party energy supplier. As Savary explained in the presentation, “Sprague has been around since 1870, right here in Portsmouth, NH. One thing to keep in mind about Sprague is that we aren’t just any energy supplier; we are the endorsed energy supplier for most of the major business associations throughout New England, including the NHGA.” This long standing presence, and regional expertise, is a valuable asset to NHGA members.
Kevin Daigle, President of the NHGA, emphasized the importance of providing members with the knowledge they need to navigate these complexities. “One of the concerns we frequently hear about from our membership is how they’re able to manage their energy costs. Whether you’re large or small, our valued partners, like Sprague, can help your company.” He then posed a common question from members: “You know one of the big questions we get are from members saying ‘I’m with my utility company now. I don’t use a third party. They’re cheaper.” What would a response to something like that be when they just want to stay with the general provider, the one who’s doing the distribution?”
Savary’s response addressed the limitations of utility companies’ rate structures. “While your electricity at a point in time might be cheaper, typically during the summertime, utilities lock in those prices for 3 to 6 months, depending on the utility. After those 3-6 months, they are required to adjust it again, meaning your bill could be locked in at a significantly higher rate after that period. With Sprague, you can lock in at a rate for a much longer period of time, which provides businesses with more budget predictability.”
Lastly, Savary clarified the billing process, alleviating concerns about multiple payments. “The short answer to that is no, a customer will not have to make multiple payments. When a customer signs up with a supplier like Sprague, it traditionally defaults to single billing.” This streamlined approach simplifies the process for NHGA members.
Ultimately, the partnership between the NHGA and Sprague Energy aims to empower businesses with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their energy costs effectively. By leveraging Sprague Energy’s expertise, NHGA members can gain a competitive edge in today’s challenging economic environment.
