The energy transition is in full swing as we look to decarbonize our energy sources and meet climate goals, but as we look toward complete electrification it’s crucial not to overlook existing solutions that can deliver significant environmental benefits right now. Renewable fuels offer a compelling alternative, particularly in areas where full electrification faces challenges, especially in the near term.
Renewable Fuels: A Viable Option Today
Renewable fuels, like renewable diesel, a non-fossil fuel, biodiesel and biogas, are derived from sustainable sources like plant oils and organic waste. These renewable fuels can be used in existing infrastructure, referred to as “drop in” replacements, making them a readily deployable solution for transportation and home heating.
Benefits of Renewable Fuels:
- Immediate Impact: They can reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly up to 75% while reducing total particulate matter fine particles and NOx. With existing infrastructure, the environmental benefits are felt immediately.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Renewable fuels can be a cost-competitive alternative, especially in areas lacking the infrastructure for full electrification.
- Drop-in Replacement: This high-performance, cold-weather friendly fuel meets ASTM D-975 specifications and requires no blending,
We Must Adopt a Multi-Pronged Approach Now
We are all committed to the path of electrification, but it can’t be the only solution, especially in the short term. Here’s what we can do today:
- Policy Support: Support policies that incentivize the production and use of renewable fuels as a bridge fuel on the path to electrification:
- Low-Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) also known as a “Clean Fuel Standard (CFS)”: Implementing an LCFS/CFS could incentivize the production and use of lower-carbon fuels, including renewable fuels and electrification.

In 2023, Sprague introduced Renewable Diesel to the New York Metro area, and in 2024, Sprague further highlighted its leadership in the energy sector by supplying the first retail fuel station dispensing renewable diesel east of the Mississippi in New York City.
