Sprague Energy Awarded Recognition Award by EPA for Children's Environmental Work PORTSMOUTH, NH, April 8, 2005 - Sprague Energy has received a Recognition Award in the First Children's Environmental Health Awards recently announced by the Environmental Protection Agency. The award was designed to increase awareness, stimulate activity and recognize efforts that protect children from environmental health risks at the local, regional, national and international level.
The Recognition Award is presented to organizations that have demonstrated commitment to protect children from environmental health risks. Children are historically more susceptible to some environmental risks because their nervous, immune, digestive and other systems are still developing. Over the years, Sprague has initiated outreach, education and intervention programs in our communities to help protect children against potential environmental risk.
"Sprague is excited and honored to receive this award," said John McClellan, President and CEO of Sprague Energy. "As a marketer and handler of petroleum products, we are very sensitive to the environmental impact of our products, and the impact they can have, especially on the young."
Sprague has been a pioneer in the initiative with Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD). In 2000, Sprague readied the infrastructure in the Northeast to begin supplying the clean diesel, six years ahead of the EPA mandate. Sprague has worked diligently throughout the communities it serves to educate and create awareness about the ability to lower diesel fuel emissions.
"Our promotion of cleaner fuels, such as ultra-low sulfur diesel for school buses, helps to protect the long-term health of our children," said McClellan. "We are committed to stay at the forefront of cleaner fuels initiatives because it is the right thing to do for our children and our communities."
Founded in 1870 as a supplier of coal and oil, Sprague has evolved into the Eastern Seaboard's leading resource for industrial, commercial, space heating and transportation fuels, as well as material handling services. Sprague distributes more than 2.5 billion gallons of petroleum products, 91Bcf (billion cubic feet) of natural gas, and handles 3 million tons of bulk materials in a safe and environmentally sound manner. Sprague, based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Axel Johnson Inc., a member of the Axel Johnson group of Stockholm, Sweden.
